Renovating
and beautifying houses on the Caribbean island of Tierra Bomba
Tierra Bomba
October 7 - October 20, 2011
Tierra Bomba
October 22 - November 4, 2011
Volunteer project: The volunteer work will be focused on the renovation of the
houses in the village of Tierra Bomba. We will start with the poorest
houses, giving the opportunity to the owners to have their walls painted and their floors
fixed. Some of the houses are in a very bad shape, but we will
only handle tasks which we are able to perform. This means that we will
mainly focus our work on beautifying the houses outside and inside as
much as we can. The aim of this work is also to bring more colours to
the village and that’s why we are painting the houses in the style of
African tribe Ndebele with a lot of bright colors.
The volunteers will work 6 hours a day in the morning. Afternoons are
free, as well as the weekends.

About Tierra Bomba Tierra Bomba is a small beautiful island located in the Cartagena bay in the North coast of Colombia. The island belongs to the city of Cartagena Di Indias which is one of the most colorful and attractive cities in Colombia. During the 16th and 17th centuries, Cartagena was part of the Spanish Empire around the Caribbean Sea and the Gulf of Mexico, one of the chief ports of the Spanish treasure fleet and so a prime target for English and French pirates and privateers. Many of Cartagena's fortifications still stand: the Castle of San Felipe, built between 1536 and 1657; the walls around the Old City (las Murallas); the undersea wall across Bocagrande built between 1771 and 1778; and the forts of San Jose and San Fernando, built between 1751 and 1759 at Bocachica. To the south of the Murallas is the modern city of Cartagena on the peninsula of Bocagrande. Cartagena is the capital of the department of Bolivar, with a population of a little over 1 million inhabitants.
Tierra Bomba is almost like a forgotten island although
it is only 15 minutes away from Cartagena by boat. In the island, there
are around 4.000 inhabitants who live virtually from tourism in the city
of Cartagena and fisheries. Tierra Bomba is not a typical destination
for tourists. The travel agencies are concentrated in Cartagena and on
the islands, which are located a little further south. For example, about
30 km southeast of the city are the Islas de Rosario (Rosario Islands),
a nationally protected park which features an aquarium with trained
dolphins and many varieties of tropical fishes. Therefore, the people in
the island usually have to go by boat to the beaches of Cartagena to
sell coconut water, necklaces and conduct massage with coconut oil. It
is also very sad that due to a lack of opportunities and education, many
of the young people are led into prostitution in the city to earn their
living.
The island is a safe place to visit and the people are very friendly and
grateful for the work that we are trying to establish.

Volunteer project: During this project, the international volunteers
will teach the youngsters in the Island of Tierra Bomba how to use their body and mind
in a better way. The participants will help the children learn how to

English
teaching and educational activities for children in Tierra Bomba
Tierra Bomba
November 21 - December 4, 2011
Volunteer project: The theme of the project is English teaching and non
formal education.
The educational part of the project will be focused on teaching basic
English and basic geography to the people in Tierra Bomba. These
workshops are mainly focused on teaching the children, but if the adults
would like to join the workshops, than they are very much welcome to do
so.
During the first days of the project, the participants and the leaders
will share their ideas and discuss the different ways to organize the
workshops. The idea is to spend between 5 to 6 hours a day during the
week days with the children and to use nice and friendly methods during
the teaching. The volunteers will be teaching English, as well as
organize games and workshops related to improving the children's
education.
We will organize a tour picnic in the city for a day with the children
of Tierra Bomba, in order to show them museums and those historical
places which they normally don't have access to due to lack of money or
other social disadvantages.
The volunteers will work 6 hours a day in the morning. Afternoons are
free, as well as the weekends.
