Clown
Theatre Workshop
Rabat
April 22 - May 2, 2011
Volunteer project: Playing with the clown character does not only mean to create laughter or to laugh at oneself, it means to attribute sense to everything. It means to face fundamental values of every human being. This is a five day workshop in clown theatre.
The aims:
1) To glue the team together and to generate new relationships between
the participants by using different games: "To play life and to live the
game"
2) To improve communication among decision-makers and their public by
extending the set of interpersonal skills: To develop the non-verbal,
the body feeling, the relation to time and space, to reconsider the way
of perceiving and living reality through humour, discrepancy,
transition, etc.
3) To achieve skills to better manage stressful situations and
conflicts, like situations in the working surroundings
4) To develop new motivations that are at the same time basic,
effective, related to games, educational and comprehensive for everybody
without discrimination against age, culture, religion and language.
The educational process:
The arrangement. The backstage where the actors can change. A choice of costumes and red noses. A leader who suggests the topics for the improvisations and the game structure. The other participants as spectators.
The improvisation as a basis of clowning. It is about playing alone or in a group a meaningful story about a given topic. The participants enter the stage without preconceived ideas, without scenes that had been prepared beforehand. They develop their play by considering all the elements that are present at that specific moment, feelings, emotions, sensations, perceptions, ideas… The improvisations exist around certain topics. The topic is the subject of a story. It is decided according to what the participants want to explore.
The sequence of a session. Games and exercises for physical and emotional warming-up, improvisations, feedback of improvisations and analysis of the actors’ play, individual and collective evaluation.
Thematic improvisations according to the « game structure ». The “game structures” are the modalities given for a specific improvisation. Example: Single or group improvisation (alone, duo, trio…); Improvisation exclusively based on gestures without words; The “gromelo” (deformed language); To play characters who do not know each other or, on the contrary, to act in a certain hierarchical relationship with one’s partner, etc. The improviser uses all the opportunities that the specific art of clowning offers to him: To dare to replunge into childhood, naivety, impertinence, to allow oneself eccentric behaviour, to play with the “social correctness”, but he always improvises in respect to himself, his partners and the audience.
Intercultural exchange sessions will be organised during the training. These sessions are an occasion for all the participants to present, exchange and discuss together what they've learnt while sharing the life of the host families. Some activities will be also organised in the city of Rabat, such as visiting historical monuments and the most attractive cultural heritage sites in the city.
Language: English or French
Accommodation: The participants are accommodated in host families. Staying with a host family is an opportunity for the participants to discover the Moroccan way of life. All the participants are expected to respect the families’ environment and the local traditions; they are also expected to be sociable and open-minded so as to build good and fruitful communication with their hosts.
Location: Rabat is the capital of Morocco. It's situated on the Atlantic Ocean.

Forum
Theatre Workshop
Rabat
April 29 - May 9, 2011
Volunteer project: The participants in this program
will attend a five day workshop in Forum Theatre. The aims of the
program are:
1) To glue the participants together. To attach value to everybody’s
personality by placing all in a non-habitual context. To allow the
participants to dare to play with their strengths and weaknesses using
the specificity offered by theatrical games.
2) To manage stress on a collective and individual level by using the
game of “Forum Theatre”. This enables you to learn how to distance
yourself from problems and how to create space for breaks and
relaxation.
3) To achieve skills for coping with situations of bad-being and
conflicts that are due to miscommunication with children, family, boss
or different people one deals with.
4) To learn new animation skills. To be able to form small theatre
groups. To create forum theatre spectacles for performing outside of the
workshop structure. To develop expression, work with young people,
conflicts...
There will be 5 days of training with 2 sessions of 3 hours each per
day, and one additional hour of consultation at the end of the day.
Content of the training: Specific games and exercises for Forum Theatre; Experiencing Forum Theatre; Making up scenarios and realization of lived or feared situations; Discovering the Image Theatre; Creating scenes of the Image Theatre and staging of different situations; Exploitation; Spectacle of Image Theatre and Forum Theatre in front of an audience chosen by the participants in the training.
A word about Forum Theatre:
Theatre of change, the Forum Theatre is about difficulties, questions,
and conflicts that individuals who are at the centre of social issues of
our time have. It tackles those topics by using scenic games. Working
with the language of theatre enables the participants to discover in
themselves hidden skills which lead them to becoming actors of their own
lives.
Forum Theatre means first of all theatre. It is about being seen, heard
and understood. All the elements of theatrical language exist already in
everyday life: the body, the voice, movements, passions, ideas. Theatre
means being aware of that language. “Every individual is a potential
actor who just hasn’t fulfilled his vocation.”
Forum Theatre and Image Theatre: These two complementary techniques help
to stage chosen topics and to create spectacles. You can choose to
perform this spectacle in front of an audience from the outside. During
the training, however, it will be a part of the group which takes the
role of the audience.
Forum Theatre spectacle (with an audience from the inside or outside):
Forum Theatre and Image Theatre encourage collective solution finding.
After having performed a scenario once, it is replayed under the
direction of a leader who represents the link between the actors and the
audience. Then, the audience is invited to participate in the theatrical
game. They come and replace the character of whom they think he is in
difficulty concerning the play, take his place and improvise with the
other actors who haven’t been replaced. So they replay the scene
according to their characters’ personality. The audience try all
possible sorts of actions to change the situation. The gathered energy
leads to coming up with alternatives of which the isolated individuals
wouldn’t have thought themselves. Drawn away from their habitual
passivity, the audience transforms into “spect-actors” of an interactive
game. In this way, Forum Theatre is a specific tool for comprehension,
communication and animation. The approach of Forum Theatre highlights
the mechanisms of conflicts, incomprehension, rejection or fear.
Intercultural exchange sessions will be organised during the training. These sessions are an occasion for all the participants to present, exchange and discuss together what they've learnt while sharing the life of the host families.
