Volunteer project: The international volunteer project is organized together with Mwakiki community since 2009. The members of the community work together to build social amenities and facilities. The community needs water storage tanks to harvest rain water for domestic use as this is a semi-arid region. Sometimes when there is too much rain, the water washes away plants and a lot of water gets lost. For this reason, as well as to prevent soil erosion, the community is also planning to build gabions. Volunteers are needed to help achieve these project goals.
Orientation will be conducted for the volunteers about the objectives
and expectations of the program. The volunteers will be involved in
construction of water tanks for the community, which involves different
activities such as concrete
mixing, plastering, floor renovation and roofing. The group will also
help in the construction of a gabion. The volunteers will spend some
time with the children in the community, talking and playing with them.
The group will work 5 hours in the morning and 2 hours in the afternoon. Saturdays and Sundays are free. Sometimes, depending on the nature of work, the time can be extended.
Leisure activities: Excursion at Taita Hills, trips to local beaches in Mombasa, playing games, learning Swahili. The trips will be done during the weekends.
Cultural exchange: There will be cultural presentations where all the volunteers will have an opportunity to present their countries and cultures. Volunteers will be free to choose presentation methods like story telling, singing, dancing, drama, speeches, etc.
Qualifications: No particular expertise or skills required. Participants should have a positive attitude, be ready to adopt and enjoy simple living conditions, be flexible and patient, and be able to do physical work. However, specialized skills and expertise (such as masonry, architecture) will be used accordingly.

Accommodation: The volunteers will be accommodated in a church hall. Please note that there will be no electricity, shower and tap water at the accommodation. Volunteers will be using buckets for bathing. Water will be boiled for drinking purposes and those who prefer can buy bottled water.
Orientation: All volunteers will first meet in Nairobi for orientation. There will be an orientation meeting on February 1st. From Nairobi the volunteers will travel together to the project site. Departure will be on February 2nd.
Location: Voi is located in the South of Kenya, approximately 6 hours drive from Nairobi. Volunteers will travel by public means (dusty road). The closest Hospital is 45 minutes drive; Markets, Post Office, Banks (ATMs), Internet and other facilities are located in Voi, 45 minutes drive from the camp site. The terrain is hilly and the weather is hot during this time of the year.

Farming
program in Eastern province
Embu, Eastern province
February 22 - March 14, 2012
Volunteer project: This is a farming program in the Eastern Province of Kenya. The volunteers will work with Kiamagia self help group in Embu. The aim of the project is to support the rural development of the area and increase income generation opportunities for the community.
The volunteer will be rotating in different farms. They will learn and assist in cultivating grafted trees, bananas, honey harvesting, tea picking, feeding and harvesting of different species of fish such as Tilapia, cutting napier grass and feeding and rearing livestock. The volunteer will also get an opportunity to visit the local tea factory and get to learn how tea is processed. The farm work involves various physical activities such as cultivating, digging, planting, weeding and harvesting. An orientation will be conducted at the beginning of the project.
The group will work 5 hours in the morning and 2 hours in the afternoon. Saturdays and Sundays are free. Sometimes, depending on the nature of work, the time can be extended.

Leisure activities: Excursion to Mwea (rice) irrigation scheme and Kiajakoma tea plant. The visits are done during the weekends. Learning about the local culture, playing games, learning songs.

Orientation: All volunteers will first meet in Nairobi for orientation. There will be an orientation meeting on February 22nd. From Nairobi the volunteers will travel together to the workcamp site. Departure will be on February 23rd.
Location: Embu is located in the Eastern part of Kenya, approximately 2 hours drive from Nairobi. Public transport is available. The closest hospital is 30 minutes drive. Markets, Post Office, Banks (ATMs), Internet and other social facilities are located in Embu, 30 minutes drive from the camp site. This is a cool area, cold at night and with hilly terrain.

Teaching
deaf and blind children in Kwale
Kwale, Coast province
February 29 - March 21, 2012
Volunteer project: The international
volunteer project is organised together with Kwale School for the deaf
since 2009.
The school offers formal learning to hearing impaired learners and they
have a small unit for blind children. The school was established in 1968
as a unit and later upgraded into a fully-fledged boarding institution.
The school has 17 fully trained teachers from the Kenya Institute of
Special Education (KISE). The learners have various degrees of hearing
losses ranging from mild to profound. The school recently received a
diagnostic audiometer.
Orientation will be conducted for the volunteers to understand the objectives and expectations of the program. Volunteers will be involved in various teaching activities such as assisting the teachers in teaching sign language, playing with the kids, speech therapy, organizing games and art lessons, teaching blind students.
The group will work 5 hours in the morning and 2 hours in the afternoon. Saturdays and Sundays are free. Sometimes, depending on the nature of work, the time can be extended.
Leisure activities: Excursion to Mwalungaje elephant sanctuary and beaches. The trips are done during the weekends.
Cultural exchange: There will be cultural presentations where all the volunteers will have an opportunity to present their countries and cultures. Volunteers will be free to choose presentation methods like story telling, singing, dancing, drama, speeches, etc.

The closest Hospital, Markets, Post Office are 5 minutes walk; Banks (ATMs), Internet and other social facilities are located in Ukunda, 30 minutes drive from the camp site or 45 minutes drive to Mombasa. The terrain is flat and the climate is hot and humid.

reverse the damage of deforestation
Mombasa, Coast province

Volunteer project: This volunteer project is organised in cooperation with Green World Campaign. The aim is to turn degraded lands green. The mission of the campaign is to focus on providing ecological and social benefits where they are most needed. The campaign spreads in schools through the green world school program. Due to the increasing number of schools involved, we need volunteers to help with environmental education programs for school children, practical planting and seedbed creation demonstration.
The volunteers will attend orientation in the beginning to understand the objectives and expectations of the program. During the project, the volunteers will join efforts to help reverse the damage done by deforestation through various activities like making seedbeds, delivery of trees in the school based programs, program monitoring and evaluation, and program expansion and development.
The group will work 5 hours in the morning and 2 hours in the afternoon. Saturdays and Sundays are free. Sometimes, depending on the nature of work, the time can be extended.
Leisure activities: Excursions to Haller and beaches during the weekends.

Art
and environmental activities in Kitui District
Kitui, Eastern province

Volunteer project: The project is organized together
with Sharpheads Arts Education and Environment Center since 2007.
Sharpheads was founded and registered under social services act with the
aim of bringing together self help groups and individual businesses
together to have a synergy effect on the community rather than groups
working individually.
In 2003 the founders mobilized the formation of Shepherd youth group
focusing on HIV/AIDS awareness, drug abuse, communal work and affiliated
themselves with Arabia Mulango C.B.O which was concentrating in Bee
keeping and crafts where they got skills to run their own bee keeping
activity. In 2005 the Sharpheads Arts Education and Environment Center
was formed and registered as Community based organization and since then
it's running several programs that focus on Orphans and Vulnerable
Children, Creative Arts, Youth Counseling, Rehabilitation and
entrepreneurship and environment.
The volunteers will have an orientation in the beginning of the project to help them understand the objectives and expectations of the program. Volunteers will support the locals in their Agri–business activities such as vegetable growing and bee keeping; Creative arts including poetry, dances, theatre, raising awareness on HIV/AIDS and malaria through arts in schools; Environmental works like tree planting, garbage collection, clean ups, etc.
The group will work 5 hours in the morning and 2 hours in the afternoon. Saturdays and Sundays are free. Sometimes, depending on the nature of work, the time can be extended.
Leisure activities: Cultural exchange program, visit to “Nzambani” rocks and “SyomaSango” resort during the weekends.
