Support the educational and care activities in Tanzanian orphanages

Volunteer project: This project is organized in collaboration with two orphanages/children’s homes located in Msufuni and Msongola. Both centers have been established to offer services to vulnerable, orphan children in the community. These services include accommodation, food, education or health assistance, among many others.

Volunteers are expected to participate in some general activities in the centers. Specifically, they will be collaborating in the following duties:
• General cleaning of the children’s center: this includes the dormitories, the
kitchen and the compound
• Preparing meals, feeding the children and washing dishes
• Helping children with their school homework when necessary
• Assisting the staff of the center in washing clothes for the children
• Organizing and running extra activities for the children
• When possible, organizing sight-seeing tours, picnics and educational/cultural visits for the children
• Assisting in training/guiding the children on issues related to personal hygiene and sanitation
• Helping with any other activities relevant to the welfare of the children or the center that might arise
• Attending basic Swahili language classes, which will provide the volunteers with the skills required to work with the children

Volunteer profile: Patient and interested in working with children; Creative and flexible; Able to work with little supervision and limited resources; Good team player; Quick to learn and to adapt to a new culture and to the local language.

Free time: The volunteers will have free time to enjoy the landscape, nature, culture and historical attractions on the Friday, Saturday and Sunday of the third week.
Some possible activities are: a safari to Mikumi National Park; a visit to Zanzibar Island; a tour of Bagamoyo.

Orientation: On arrival, the volunteers will receive an orientation to come to understand the various program policies, share their fears and expectations, participate in team building activities, and get familiar with the culture of the community, etc.

Accommodation: Volunteers will be accommodated at a host family or at the Youth center.

Early childhood education program in Central Zanzibar
Central Zanzibar              January 16 - February 4, 2012

Volunteer project: The volunteer project will take place in Central Zanzibar, a place that has hosted quite a good number of volunteers who have been enjoying the greatest hospitality from the community.

This project is organized in collaboration with the Government of Zanzibar (Department of Youth Development). It is aimed at supporting the efforts of the community to offer the most suitable learning conditions for the children between the ages of 3 and 6. The project will also provide an environmental conservation demonstration for the kids, in order to help them to grow with the understanding of this matter and its importance.

During the project, the volunteers will participate in the following activities:
• Painting the nursery school building
• Establishment and maintenance of a tree nursery at the school
• Teaching the children basic environmental facts
• Organizing extra activities for the kids between the ages of 3 and 6 (sports, games, songs, drawings, etc.)
• Learning Swahili language

The volunteers will work 6-7 hours per day, from Monday to Friday. Saturdays, Sundays and public holidays will be free.

Volunteer profile: Interested in working with children; Flexible and quick to adapt to a new living environment; Creative and able to work under limited resources.

Free time: During the weekends, the volunteers will have the opportunity to visit various attractions in Zanzibar. This can be done individually or we could also organize a group visit. Some possible activities are: Safari blue (swimming, snorkeling, eating seafood, playing at sand banks) and Beach & Nature trip (visiting Jozani Forest, Spice tour, swimming with dolphins).

Language: English

Accommodation: Volunteers will be accommodated in the local residential area, and some of them in the nursery school classrooms, depending on the availability of rooms. Water and electricity will be available. Vegetarian meals will be available.

Orientation: On arrival, all volunteers will attend an orientation session. The aim of this session is to help the volunteers build a team and also to share with them some practical information about the country, the host community and their volunteer project. Environmental conservation and painting a school on the tropical island of Pemba
Ng’ombeni, Pemba              February 6 - February 25, 2012

Volunteer project: The volunteer project will take place on the Island of Pemba. The preparation team and the host community are looking forward to working, sharing and learning together with motivated volunteers from all over the world.

This project is organized with the support of the Department of Youth Development of Zanzibar and the local community, in order to address environmental and educational challenges in the area. Over the last six years we have been working in this community to construct a nursery school, which is now on its finishing stages. The volunteers are expected to help with the completion of the work. Along with building education facilities, the community has been struggling as well to maintain the coastal environmental through tree planting.

During the project, volunteers will collaborate in the following activities:
• Painting the nursery school building
• Planting trees (mangrove) along the beach to control the loss of land to the ocean due to erosion.
• Environmental conservation awareness
• Fundraising activities to support young local fishermen to obtain environmentally friendly fishing equipment
• Attending Swahili classes

Volunteer project: This project is organized as a result of the desire expressed by many international volunteers from different countries throughout the years to have the opportunity to discover, learn and share the Tanzanian culture. The project is
quite different from the typical workcamps, since it involves learning, experiencing and participating in various cultural aspects, rather than physical work.

The volunteers will participate in the following activities during their stay in Tanzania:
• Experiencing home stay with local people
• Intensive Swahili language classes
• Classes on traditional dances, art and music
• Day trips to arts and culture places
• Exploring village museums
• Assisting in teaching English and Mathematics to kids 3 to 6 years old in the local nursery schools in the area
• Assisting in organizing sports, games and activities for kids 3 to 6 years old in the local nursery schools

Volunteer project: The volunteer project is organized in Pemba island on the topic of Children and Environment. The preparation team and the host community are looking forward to working, sharing and learning together with you.

The project is organized with the support of the Ministry of Social Welfare, Youth, Women and Children Development of Zanzibar. The project aims at improving the classrooms of the local school and also to provide environmental education and awareness to the students and young people in the community.

During the project, the volunteers will participate in the following activities:
• Conducting environmental education activities
• Establishment of a tree nursery at the school
• Painting school buildings
• Attending Swahili classes

Cultural immersion program in Zanzibar

Volunteer project: The volunteer project will be held in Maungani, Zanzibar and it is an opportunity for all participants to get exposure to Tanzanian culture.

During the successful language project carried out in this community in 2011, many international volunteers (who were teaching Spanish, Italian, English and
French in different schools), expressed a strong interest in being exposed to the
local culture. This is precisely the aim of the present project, which has been organized taking into account that generalized desire of the volunteers. The project is also expected to empower local youth and women to carry on economic activities, hence improving their standard of living. It is supported by various local groups of women and youth, as well as by the Ministry of Social Welfare, Youth, Women and Children Development of Zanzibar.

Volunteers will participate in various cultural activities organized in the community, with the purpose of learning and sharing experiences. These activities include:
• Learning to weave environmentally friendly mats and baskets.
• Learning various ways of hair plaiting
• Henna painting classes
• Cooking classes, to learn about Tanzanian traditional food and also try new recipes from the countries of other volunteers.
• Tie-dye and batik
• Home visits/stays
• Khanga dress workshops (about the various uses of khanga, the traditional coastal dress)
• Visits to various public & cultural places

Youth and Women empowerment program
Magole, Temeke          March 5 - April 14, 2012

Volunteer project: The Youth and Women empowerment program is designed to provide youth and women in the community with the opportunity to improve their education level, acquire skills and knowledge relevant to manage their surroundings and become self-reliant. The project is based on the understanding that both women and youth play a key role in family and in the development of the community, so, if they are given the chance, they can make a significant contribution in the fight against poverty.

Volunteers will help local youth and women by participating in the following activities, including some teaching and training:
• Teaching English language (reading, writing and speaking)
• Assisting the people in the adult education class in using the existing library facilities in the community and the city, as well as other information sources
• Organizing study tours and visits with local women and youth to get some
exposure to different issues related to the needs of the community.
• Assisting in organizing workshops/training on health and sanitation, and on other women and youth development issues

Volunteers will be working 6 hours a day, five days a week; Saturday, Sunday and public holidays are free.

Volunteer project: This international volunteer project is organized with the support of the Ministry of Social Welfare, Youth, Women and Children Development of Zanzibar. The project aims at addressing various health issues in the community, especially those concerning malaria and HIV/AIDS.

During the project, the volunteers will collaborate in the following activities:
• Participation in workshops/discussions about HIV/AIDS and Malaria
• Renovation of the local health center
• Attendance to Swahili classes
• Participation in some cultural activities (e.g: henna painting, hair making, workshops on khanga - the traditional coastal dress, etc.)

Middle-term projects in Tanzania

 

Organizing educational and fun activities for primary school children
Mikindani, Mtwara          February 6 - March 31, 2012

Volunteer project: This project is organized in cooperation with Salem School, which is located in the Southeastern part of Tanzania. The school is dedicated to provide quality education for children, both boys and girls, between the ages of 2 and 14. It is an English medium school with a team of committed teachers who strive to ensure the pupils receive a quality education that prepares them for the future.

The volunteers are expected to participate in general activities in the school. Specifically, they will collaborate in the following duties:
• Assisting in teaching English, Mathematics and any other subjects they feel comfortable with
• Assisting staff in organizing fun and learning activities for the students
• Helping students who are struggling with English (slow learners)
• Sharing skills and experience with the local teachers.

Volunteers will be working for six hours a day, from Monday to Friday. Weekends and public holidays will be free. The volunteers can organize a safari/travel around before or after the project.

Volunteer profile: Interested in teaching and working with children; Good understanding of the subject you would like to teach; Good level of English; Sociable, committed and creative; Flexible, open-minded and patient.
