Volunteer opportunities in KENYA

Teaching English, Math and Social sciences to primary school students in Kitui
       Kitui, Eastern province          September 16 - October 7, 2010

Volunteer project: The volunteer project is organized together with Central Primary School since 2007. The school was started in the early 1950’s by the Arab Asian Community and was then named the Arab Asian School. The school offers formal education to primary school students of Kitui area. Central Primary is under the District Education Board and it serves children of all races. Currently the school has 25 classes and the Special Unit for the Blind. We aim to encourage the students to value education, mentor them, and demonstrate the power of voluntary service.

The volunteers will have an orientation in the beginning of the project. The group
will be involved in supporting the teachers in Central Primary School by teaching English, Maths, Social sciences, Physical education, also tutoring the students, as well as counseling them. Guidance will be given to the volunteers by the teachers.

The group will work 5 hours in the morning and 2 hours in the afternoon. Saturday and Sundays are free. Sometime, depending on the nature of work, the time can be extended.

Leisure activities: Visit to “Nzambani” rocks and “Syomasango” resort during the weekends.

Cultural exchange: There will be cultural presentations where all the volunteers will have an opportunity to present their countries and cultures. Volunteers will be free to choose presentation methods like story telling, singing, dancing, drama, speeches, etc.

Qualifications: No particular expertise or skills required. Participants should have a positive attitude, be ready to adopt and enjoy simple living conditions, be flexible and patient. However, specialized skills and expertise (such as teaching math, English, sciences, tutoring and knowledge of teaching blind students) will be used accordingly. Volunteers should respect the local people and culture.

Language: English

Accommodation: Accommodation is in a classroom. Please note that there will be electricity, but no shower and pipe water/taps at the accommodation.

Orientation: All volunteers will first meet in Nairobi for orientation. There will be an orientation meeting on September 16th. From Nairobi the volunteers will travel together to the workcamp site. Departure will be on September17th.

Location: Kitui is located in the Eastern part of Kenya, approximately 2 and half hours drive from Nairobi. Public transport is available. The closest Hospital, Markets, Post Office, Banks (ATMs), Internet and other social facilities are located in Kitui, 2 kilometers from the camp site. The terrain is flat. The area is dry and hot.

Terminal: Jomo Kenyatta International Airport in Nairobi

Age range: 21 and over

Extra fee: 250 Euros
The extra fee is intended to support the hosting organization who does not have sufficient funds. It is due upon arrival on the project.
 



 

Environmental conservation and spreading awareness among local people in Mombasa
       Mombasa, Coast province          December 2 - December 23, 2010

Volunteer project: The project is organised together with Magongo Santana friends of environment youth group. The group is involved in promoting environmental issues. They make a living by collecting garbage from different households. They sensitize the community on issues such as waste management and HIV/AIDS. The group needs support in terms of organizational development and technical expertise. Volunteers who can train the group specifically in the areas of Music production, drama, marketing their painting and drawings, are needed.

Orientation will be conducted for the volunteers to understand the objectives and expectations of the program. Volunteers will be involved in environmental conservation, which involves several activities such as garbage collection, clean up,
tree planting. The volunteers will also take part in fundraising, HIV/AIDS and sanitation outreach programs for the local community.

The group will work 5 hours in the morning and 2 hours in the afternoon. Saturday and Sundays are free. Sometime, depending on the nature of work, the time can be extended.

Study theme: Using environment as a form of art. Bring info on this theme.

Leisure activities: Excursion to Fort Jesus and to local beaches. The visits are done during the weekends.

However, specialized skills and expertise (such as accounting, management, artistic skills, environmentalist, peer educators) will be used accordingly.

Orientation: All volunteers will first meet in Nairobi for orientation. There will be an orientation meeting on December 2nd. From Nairobi the volunteers will travel together to the workcamp site. Departure will be on December 3rd.

Location: Mombasa is located in the Southern part of Kenya, approximately 8 hours drive from Nairobi. Public transport is available. The closest hospital is 5 minutes drive; markets, post office, banks (ATMs), Internet and other social facilities are located in Mombasa, 20 minutes drive from the camp site.

Age range: 19 and over
