Volunteer opportunities in Portugal

 

Graffiti Walls
      
Olhão, Faro          September 6 - September 14, 2010

Volunteer project: The local host is a youth organization, which aim is to stimulate active participation of young people in society, to develop activities in intercultural, educational, social, sports, recreational and environmental character, with a view to the self-development of young people in the region.

The international volunteer project will be dedicated to the Graffiti culture.The aim of the project is to create awareness about the difference between Graffiti Art and Tags. So the main task is to identify the tags and clean them. This will involve painting the walls and taking out the tags. The main activities are identifying the tags in the city, the walls that need to be restored and cleaning them, in order to give more visibility to the artistic graffitis.
The international participants will be in contact with yougnsters from socially disadvantaged neighbourhoods, so the social aspect of this project is also very important to promote intercultural dialogue and create changes in their behavior.

Free time activities: The volunteers will have group dynamics activities for team building (such as treasure hunt, cultural activities) and some visits to the islands and to different cities.

Accommodation: Participants will sleep in the gym of a school with bunk beds and Internet access provided.

Location: Olhão is a fisherman city near the capital of Algarve in the South of Portugal. The airport is at a 20 km distance. Nowadays it is one of the most popular cities for Graffiti culture.

Preserving the natural and cultural patrimony of Lousa
      
Lousã, Coimbra          September 13 - September 27, 2010

Volunteer project: Lousã is a beautiful town (15 000 habitants) in the centre of the Serra da Lousa mountains. Not long ago, it was countryside, but because of the development of the region, especially Coimbra City, Lousa is growing up and now it’s a place with a lot of modern attractions existing close to tradition and beautiful nature.

In the area of Lousã, the team of international volunteers will help to restore the cultural heritage (mills and a chapel); create accessible path; building a picnic area with wood and accessible for different people; building small wooden bridges over the river; cleaning the path and putting some signs; promote intercultural exchange; encourage voluntarism in the community and promote Lousã and the region. The volunteers will be cleaning the path and building tables and wooden bridges with the support of a technical leader. They will also organize cultural activities with the community.

Free time activities: The program includes a folklore workshop, a visit to Coimbra (university city), to an old village in the mountain and going to the beach.

Accommodation: Volunteers will be accommodated in a youth hostel in Lousã.

Art on the pavement
      
Sintra, Lisboa          September 16 - September 30, 2010

Volunteer project: The volunteer project aims to promote the exchange of personal and cultural experiences among international participants and local people. The volunteers will learn pavement construction techniques and develop a common artistic action related to the local culture and environment, promoting the natural potential of the region, traditions and heritage. The idea is to develop and enrich local open spaces through arts. Volunteers are invited to bring out their artistic side.

The main tasks to be undertaken by the group will be preparation of the place to build the pavement, preparing the materials (stone); learning the techniques of placing the pavement; participation in the group activities such as travel, animations, etc.

Language: English

Free time activities: Cultural visits, meetings with artists, hiking, trips to the beach.

Accommodation: In a building.

Location: Sintra, in Lisbon Region. The town is a UNESCO World Heritage Site on account of its 19th century Romantic architecture.

Age range: 18 - 30 years old
 



 

Promote Fair Trade and organic farming in Amarante
      
Amarante, Porto          September 16 - September 30, 2010

Volunteer project: This volunteer project in Amarante is intended to raise awareness among the international participants and the local population on organic farms, organic food and fair trade; to develop skills related to agriculture work in organic farms and environment preservation; to run activities in order to increase the level of commitment for organic and fair trade products at local level (Amarante).

The volunteers in the project will be involved in the following activities: group dynamics; presentation to the city and the region; discussions on the project theme (objectives, tasks division); visit to the most important places of the city; training about fair trade and sustainable development (e.g. workshop about Fair Trade and healthy food); direct contact and work with local organic producers; organizing an open air event (fair) in the city center about organic and fair trade products.

Free time activities: Visits to some of the main cities and spots in the North of Portugal (Guimarães, Porto, Parque Natural do Alvão).

Accommodation: Participants will be accommodated in shared rooms (4 participants each) of Casa da Juventude de Amarante (participants should bring a sleeping bag). Healthy food with organic and vegetarian ingredients will be provided. Laundry available (self-service). The youth centre has free wireless.

Location: Amarante is a small town in the North of Portugal, part of Porto district (60 km far from Porto, to the interior) with 12.000 inhabitants. It is a quite famous city for tourism, culture and wine production. Indeed it is quite near (18 km) to the Oporto wine region. It is crossed by Tâmega River (one of the rivers ending at Douro River that crosses Porto till the Atlantic ocean) and is in the valley of one of the most important Portuguese mountains, Marão (1450 m). Amarante is well located (nearby passes highway A4 connecting to Oporto and highway A11 connecting to Guimarães) and has a good public transport system (bus station). The city is 40 min away from the nearest airport (Oporto) by car.
