Volunteer opportunities in Tanzania

 

promote a culture of reading among the local people in Temeke
       Temeke          September 12 - September 25, 2010

Volunteer project: This volunteer project is part of a series of local community library initiatives, which hope to expand literacy and education. Improving the reading level and literacy of the community is an important goal. With higher literacy rates, the local people will have more job and life opportunities before them.
Volunteers will help organize various activities to promote a culture of reading among the local people. In an effort to make reading exciting, the volunteers will organize children’s reading events and competitions and essay writing competitions. Alternative methods of presenting information and encouraging library use will involve music performances, drawings, and drama. The participants will also be asked to help maintain the surrounding gardens as an additional activity during their time in Temeke.

Study part: The study theme of this project is “reading for development”. Volunteers will be expected to share and discuss views on relevant issues.

Cultural exchange: Each country or culture presented in the project will have an opportunity to do a presentation. Volunteers are encouraged to be prepared beforehand to present their countries and cultures. Depending on the interest of the participants, the presentation can be in the form of songs, drama, dance, storytelling, speech, etc. Make it more creative and more fun!

Free time activities: Several engaging activities are possible during the volunteer project, such as a tour to Mikumi or Uduzungwa Mountains National parks to view wild animals, a week night in Zanzibar, a tour to the historical sites of Bagamoyo, and swimming at South Beach.

Providing access to quality education for the children of Kilimanjaro
       Mwanga, Kilimanjaro          September 19 - October 2, 2010
                     Mwanga, Kilimanjaro          October 3 - October 16, 2010

Volunteer project: The project is organized in collaboration with the local schools promoting the welfare of the children by enabling them to access quality education. The group of international volunteers will participate in the following activities:
- plastering and painting of classrooms walls;
- making some educational drawings in the school walls;
- organizing sports and games for the kids;
- organizing cultural activities like cooking, singing and dancing;
- helping kids at the school with their school homeworks, especially English.

On arrival, the volunteers will receive one day orientation, getting familiar with the culture of the community, understanding various program policies, sharing fears and expectations, team building activities, etc.

In order to link the work and learning experiences, the volunteers will also participate in workshops on the project theme: Children Welfare: Access to quality Education, as well as cultural nights and visits to organizations/ projects on the same theme.

Environmental conservation along the Indian ocean coast
       Mtwara          September 19 - October 2, 2010
       Mtwara          October 3 - October 16, 2010

Volunteer project: The international volunteer project takes place in Mtwara Region, Southeastern part of Tanzania along the Indian Ocean coast, and has as a main objective the Coast environmental conservation. What makes this project special is the location, type of work and diversity of the volunteers expected to participate from the neighboring countries Mozambique, Kenya, Uganda, who will join the rest of the volunteers coming from North America, Europe and Asia.

This will be the most dynamic activity which will bring the true meaning of labour, cooperation and achievements. Volunteers will participate in conservation of the coastal environment including planting and taking care of the mangrove trees along the Indian Ocean coast. Other activity will be the protection of marine wildlife.
Additionally, the volunteers will be teaching, organizing sports, games, arts and crafts for children in the local primary schools focusing on environmental education.

On arrival, the volunteers will receive one day orientation, getting familiar with the culture of the community, understanding various program policies, sharing fears and expectations, team building activities, etc.

Study part: The area of focus during this project will be Environmental Sustainability. Volunteers will have an opportunity to discuss and share opinions on Millennium development goal number 7, and what can be done from the individual, community, on national and international level to bring positive change. You are kindly requested to study and obtain some information from your home country regarding the realization of Millennium development goals, in particular on Environmental sustainability.

Volunteers are encouraged to be prepared beforehand to present their countries and cultures. Depending on the interest of the participants, the presentation can be in the form of songs, drama, dance, storytelling, speech, etc. Make it more creative and more fun!

Free time activities: Excursions have always been an exciting activity in the project. During the week and on weekends, the volunteers will get involved in a wide range of outdoor pursuits for fun and recreation. Possibilities are to visit Selous National Park, one the biggest in Tanzania, experience typical Tanzanian coastal culture, history and the beauty of the region through excursions to Mikindani, Msanga Mkuu Peninsula, and the famous Slave market in Mtwara.

Accommodation: Volunteers will be accommodated at a local guest house.

Location: Mtwara Rural District of Mtwara Region. The project is located about 8 hours drive by public transport from Dar es Salaam.

Reforestation and environmental work in an eco village in Temeke
       Chamazi, Temeke          November 14 - November 27, 2010

Volunteer project: Eco Village is one of the major volunteer projects implemented in Tanzania over the last 25 years. Various activities are taking place including farming, tree planting, and compost making, promoting the use of alternative energy like solar power and biogas as well as construction of low cost housing.
During the project, volunteers will be taking part in the following activities:
- Establishment of Tree nursery: This will include filling soil and manure/compost in the plastic bags to raise seeds of various trees to be planted in the Eco village as well distributed to the community.
- Tree planting: Depending on weather; if is going to be rain, volunteers will involved in planting trees within the conservation areas and in the Eco village.
- Establishment and maintenance of composite site: Volunteers will be involved in collection of compost materials to the composite sites, mix with waste from the animals to make compost. The compost is used for garden maintenance and tree planting.
The volunteers will be also involved in awareness rising in the community & schools around on the issue of garbage separation and composting, as well as workshops on sustainable living.

On arrival, the volunteers will receive one day orientation, getting familiar with the culture of the community, understanding various program policies, sharing fears and expectations, team building activities, etc.

Volunteers are encouraged to be prepared beforehand to present their countries and cultures. Depending on the interest of the participants, the presentation can be in the form of songs, drama, dance, storytelling, speech, etc. Make it more creative and more fun!

Free time activities: Excursions have always been an exciting activity in the project. During the week and on weekends, the volunteers will be involved in a wide range of outdoor pursuits for fun and recreation. Possible activities are visit to Bagamoyo historical town (about 60 km from the project), South beach swimming, and week night in Zanzibar, etc.

Language: English

Accommodation: Volunteers will be accommodated in a Youth center within the Eco village project. Mattresses will be provided and the volunteers will share rooms. There is water, toilets and bathrooms.

Location: Chamazi, Temeke district of the Dar es Salaam Region

Terminal: Dar es Salaam Airport

Teaching English to youth in Zanzibar
       Central Zanzibar          November 28 - December 11, 2010
       Central Zanzibar          December 12, 2010 - January 1, 2011

Volunteer project: This international volunteer project is organized in Zanzibar under the theme Girl Child Education and Youth empowerment. The volunteers will be involved in teaching English language to the young people in the community, especially those who are coming from disadvantaged families. English language will help them to access further studies or employment in the tourism sector which is growing in Zanzibar, hence empower them to fight poverty. The project is encouraging more young girls to take part since they have been behind due to the cultural and traditional practices.
Other activities will include organizing sports and games for children in the local primary schools. This is an activity which will take place after school hours. The sports can be football, volleyballs, netball and other games and sports which kids and other young people can learn. The idea of this activity is to bring together young girls and boys to promote the sense of equality among boys and girls. Volunteers can organize other activities with the aim of promoting these ideas.
The volunteers will be also involved in painting school classrooms so as to create a better atmosphere for the children who study in the school.

On arrival, the volunteers will receive one day orientation, getting familiar with the culture of the community, understanding various program policies, sharing fears and expectations, team building activities, etc.

Cultural exchange: Each country or culture presented in the project will have an opportunity to do a presentation. Volunteers are encouraged to be prepared beforehand to present their countries and cultures. Depending on the interest of the participants, the presentation can be in the form of songs, drama, dance, storytelling, speech, etc. Make it more creative and more fun!

Free time activities: Excursions have always been an exciting activity in the project. During the week and on weekends, the volunteers will be involved in a wide range of outdoor pursuits for fun and recreation. Most of the activities will be organized in collaboration with local youth. Possibilities are a day visit to Jozani National Park, beach swimming, spice tour, visiting historical sites including Stone Town, slave market and museums, snorkeling and swimming with dolphins at Kamikazi Beach.

Accommodation: Volunteers will be accommodated in a local kindergarten, in shared rooms. Mattresses will be provided. There is water, toilets and bathrooms.

Location: Zanzibar
