Construction of a youth training and creative arts center in Mfuwe
Mfuwe          June 9 - June 23, 2012

Volunteer project: Madzibambera youth development and creative arts project started in 2002 with an aim to create small scale employment among youths and address issues of HIV and AIDS in Mfuwe, Eastern Province. The organization is also involved with wood carving, weaving, cloth works and they also do art performances.

Madzibamera is located in the famous South Luangwa National Park area. The park has all the big five and has a variety of unique plant and animal species that can be seen only in this part of Africa.

In 2012, the project will undertake the construction of a workshop for production and training centre. This workshop will provide space for training young people from the community in carpentry, woodwork, ICT and metal work. It will also provide space for the organization to store and display their arts. Local professional builders will be involved in the construction phase, whom the volunteers will support.

Leisure time: The project is located near one of the biggest national parks and the volunteers can go for a visit there. They will also get the opportunity to learn how to make artistic souvenirs that they can take home with them.

Language: English

Accommodation: The participants will be accommodated by the local host organization and there are adequate sanitation facilities at the campsite. Volunteers are required to bring their own sleeping bag and mat.

Location: Madzibambera, Mfuwe. Mfuwe is located in the south Luangwa National Park area in the East of Zambia. It is about 685 km away from the capital city Lusaka and 100 km from the provincial capital Chipata. It is 25 kilometers from the park's main entrance. Mfuwe is one of the busiest destinations for tourists coming to Zambia and has one of the greatest wildlife sanctuaries in the world.

Age range: 19 and over

Extra fee: 210 Euro

Building a new classroom at Mnkhanya community school
Mfuwe          July 7 - July 21, 2012

Volunteer project: The Mnkhanya Community School is an institution run by the Mnkhanya Community Resource Board and is located in Mnkhanya chiefdom in Mambwe District of the Eastern Province. The Community Resource Board is a community initiative that hopes to improve the livelihoods of its members. The Mnkhanya Community School in Mfuwe was started in 2005 and while there has been progress, it hasn’t been much. The school caters for children within the community.
The village is located in the famous South Luangwa National Park area. The park has all the big five and has a variety of unique plant and animal species that can be seen only in this part of Africa.

The international volunteers in 2012 will help the local community in constructing a one-by-three classroom block for the school. This will ensure that children of three different grades don’t share the same classroom at the same time as is the case now. This work may involve carrying sand on wheel barrows from a nearby stream to the project site and moving blocks from the place they were made to the site.

Leisure time: The Community Resource Board which looks after the school and the parks will organize a day trip to the South Luangwa National Park.

Raising awareness for the preservation of the mighty Victoria Falls
Livingstone          July 28 - August 11, 2012

Volunteer project: Livingstone is the tourist capital of Zambia. It is home to the Victoria Falls, one of the world’s Seven Natural Wonders. It is also a very historic city with many relics from a bygone era. It has a railway museum and the Livingstone museum is worth visiting. The Mosi-O-Tunya National Park is home to the endangered Black Rhino.

The Victoria Falls are among the most spectacular waterfalls in the world. The Zambezi River, which is more than 2 km wide at this point, plunges noisily down a series of basalt gorges and raises an iridescent mist that can be seen more than 20 km away. Below the falls the river enters a narrow series of basaltic gorges. The
fragile ecosystem of the riverine rainforest within the waterfalls splash zone is also of particular interest.
In 2009, the Victoria Falls (shared between Zambia and Zimbabwe) celebrated its 20th anniversary after being declared a World Heritage site by UNESCO.

The aim of the international volunteer project at the Victoria Falls is raising awareness and educating tourists about the importance of preserving and maintaining the World Heritage Site clean and sustainable. As part of the awareness efforts, the volunteers will have heritage awareness classes with local children. The group will also help in a local school by painting classrooms.
The project is organized in partnership with the National Heritage Conservation Commission and is hosted in Livingstone.

Leisure time: Livingstone, famous as the tourist capital of the country, offers limitless possibilities for the free time. Some options are visiting places of interest, a boat cruise, game viewing and a guaranteed visit to the Victoria Falls every day.

Accommodation: The volunteers will be hosted at Palm groove primary school, which is the local school that they will support as part of the project. There are adequate sanitation facilities. Volunteers are required to bring their own sleeping bag and mat.

Location: Livingstone is 600 km away from Lusaka and is serviced by road and air. It has its own International airport. The city itself is ever alive and if you are staying within the city, eating and shopping places are all within walking distance.

Renovation of Kamatipa community school
Kitwe          August 12 - August 26, 2012

Volunteer project: This volunteer project is held in the Copperbelt Province of Zambia. International volunteers will come together to lend a hand at the community school in Kamatipa community. The project started last year and it focused on making desks and chairs for the pupils.

The aim of the project this is year is renovation and improvement of the Kamatipa community school building. The volunteers will work on plastering the walls and the floor of the school. The group will also help fixing windows that were broken.

Leisure time: Kitwe is a big city and there’s no shortage of leisure activities to get involved on weekends and also during the week.

Language: English

Accommodation: The participants will be accommodated in a hostel in the city centre and will be provided with transport to and from the campsite. They need to bring their own sleeping bag and mat.

Location: Rufunsa

Construction of a new classroom block in a community school
Solwezi          September 8 - September 22, 2012

Volunteer project: Kyalalankuba Community School is a community owned school that was constructed through the help of international volunteer groups. Before 2007 this community had no school and the children had to walk long distances and literally stopped school during the rainy season. Volunteers have been working with this community since 2007 and there is now a school in the area.

The volunteers will construct a third classroom block for the school. This includes putting up a floor, raising the walls and painting.

Leisure time: Solwezi is a growing mining city with plenty activities going on all the time. It is home to a National Heritage site where cave paintings of the early Stone Age dwellers can be found.

Language: English

Accommodation: The volunteers will be accommodated by the school in traditionally made huts. This offers a unique experience for the volunteers as they will live in a traditional way for two weeks. There are adequate sanitation facilities. Volunteers are required to bring their own sleeping bag and mat.

Location: Kyalalankuba is located in Solwezi in the North-Western part of Zambia. It is 700 km from Lusaka.

Building a training centre for orphans in Rufunsa
Rufunsa          September 29 - October 13, 2012

Volunteer project: Rufunsa was originally part of the South Luangwa Game Reserve. Sadly there are very few animals in the area due to illegal game hunting and poaching. It is located 170 km East of Lusaka.
The community is very small and yet has many orphans. Many parents have been killed by HIV or malaria, other could not get proper health care. The community came together and founded the Blessed Hope orphanage. It is run by members of the community and it has gotten some funds from the Government. International volunteer groups have been helping in the orphanage since 2008 and to date a chicken run has been constructed as well as a hostel for the orphans. ILast year, the community and volunteers constructed a workshop for rearing chickens.

The volunteers this year will help construct a workshop that will house a Tailoring Training Centre for the orphaned children in Rufunsa. The international group of volunteers will work in close cooperation with the local community.
The international volunteers together with local youth, will also take part in an awareness campaign on Youth Reproductive Health.

Leisure time: Rufunsa is in a rural area and while it may be lacking in leisure activities, it is surrounded by beautiful hills that are easy to climb and are good for picnics.
